Portable Room Air Conditioners

Cheap Portable Air Conditioners - How To Find Them

Cheap portable air conditioners, and portable cooling units in general, seem to be the rage today. They can cool that hot spot in your home, or keep one room extra cool, or even be used in a tent for outdoor events. It seems there are no restrictions on their use.

Since they are portable - they can easily be moved from one area or room to another. That's a feature that other air conditioners cannot boast. These units are mounted on wheels (casters) that make the portable air conditioners easy to roll around at the user's discretion.

Most people in the market for a small air conditioner agree that portable air conditioners are much more desirable than window units. Window units are notorious for damaging window casings and frames. For that reason many apartment managers do not allow their renters to install window units.

The reasons that people want either a window air conditioner or a portable air conditioner at all vary. For most people they prefer cooling a single room or area over the expense of cooling the entire house via the central air conditioner. For some the central unit doesn't cool the entire house efficiently so the cooling is supplemented by the addition of a window or portable unit.

Although most portable air conditioners seem to offer essentially the same benefits there are some things one should look for before making a purchase. Always start with research. If you find a great deal on a unit but you've never heard of the brand you need to investigate. It's possible this is a great new company but it's also possible that this is a fly-by-night company that will be out of business before the end of the year. How will you purchase any required replacement parts or follow up on a guarantee? Do some research before buying a cheap portable air conditioner.

Speaking of cheap, consider why a portable unit is cheap(er). It’s great to save money but sometimes it's a wise decision to spend a little more in order to get a quality product. For example, when comparing a cheap portable air conditioner to a more expensive model check things such as the outside of the unit. What is it made of? It’s better to have one of quality construction than one that is likely to break easily if knocked over. Look at the buttons and knobs on the unit. Again, they should be constructed of a quality plastic or metal instead of something that will not hold up to daily use.

Guarantees are always important as well. When purchasing a household appliance one always runs the chance of getting a "lemon". If you have a strong guarantee that will never be a problem, but some companies may look for ways to blame you, the user of the appliance, for any malfunctions. Know what you are buying before you buy it. A cheap portable air conditioner may not be your best choice - it may cost you money in the long run!
